Telephone Installation
- Where to Apply and Application Procedures
Apply below when you would like to install a telephone. You will need to bring some form of identification (passport, foreign resident registration card, etc.) as well as something to confirm your address when you apply. - Telephone
You can either choose to buy or rent an NTT telephone, or buy your own telephone available at retail outlets.

Public Telephones
There are a number of public telephones conveniently located at telephone boxes on the street, at stations and in front of shops. Use ¥10 or ¥100 coins. (If you use a ¥100 coin, you will not receive any change.) You can make calls on green telephones using phone cards.
You can access an international line with telephones displaying the International Telephone sign. |
International Calls
You can make an international call either using operator assistance or international direct dial. To make an operator-assisted call, first dial 0051 (no area code), and give the name of the person and the number you are calling, and whether it is a collect call. To make an international direct-dial call, only registered telephones can be used. (Registration is free.)
