Taxis are convenient when you do not know how to get to your destination, provided you can tell the taxi driver what your destination is. However, the fare is more expensive than the fare for buses or trains.
If you cannot speak Japanese, it is a good idea to write down the place name and its location on a piece of paper, and show it to the driver.
If you are at a train station, taxis are available at the taxi stand.
If you are walking along a street, you can flag a taxi that has a red vacant lamp on, by raising your hand. Taxis with a green occupied lamp already have passengers.
After you get in a taxi, tell the driver where you want to go.
The fare is indicated on the meter next to the driver.
Pay the fare when you reach your destination. It is not necessary to tip the driver.
There is an additional charge for fares after 11:00 p.m.
