Postcards and other mail can be sent to places within Japan or abroad simply by affixing the designated amount of postage and dropping them in the mailbox at any place. Postcards and stamps can be purchased at post office counters and vending machines. You can also buy them at shops which display the postal mark (
).
Domestic Mail
- Postcards
Prestamped postcards, which cost ¥50, will be delivered to any place in Japan. When you use a regular postcard or a card of the same size as a postcard available at retail outlets, you must affix a ¥50 stamp.
- Mail
Mail in envelopes measuring 14 to 23.5cm x 9 to 12cm, less than 1 cm in thickness and weighing 25 grams or less, can be delivered to any place in Japan, provided you affix a ¥80 stamp. Mail of any other size must be confirmed at the post office for postage.
- Parcels
Postage depends on the weight and destination of the package.
Special Deliveries
- Express Mail: Postage for express mail depends on the weight. It usually costs between ¥270 and ¥630. Express Mail (sokutatsu) is stamped on the envelope.
- Registered Mail: Important documents and valuable items can be sent in the mail by following the procedures and paying the prescribed charges at the post office. (Please note that there may be specific restrictions, such as for precious metals and jewelry.)
- Cash Registered Mail: Cash should not be sent through regular mail. Be sure to send cash by cash registered mail, using the special envelopes that can be purchased at the post office.
