Garbage and Recycling

How to Dispose of Garbage

Take the garbage to the garbage collection site by 8:00 a.m. of the designated collection day. Do not dispose of garbage after collection, on days other than the collection day, or at night. Sort your garbage by type — burnable garbage, non-burnable garbage and recyclable resources (used paper, bottles and cans), and then dispose of each type on the specified collection day.
It is best to follow the rules carefully in order to avoid causing your neighbors any problems. There are legal fines for littering.

Garbage collection site

  • Burnable Garbage: Burnable garbage, such as kitchen scraps and wastepaper, is collected twice a week. Dispose of burnable garbage in a garbage container or garbage bag designated by the 23 metropolitan cities.
  • Non-burnable Garbage: Non-burnable garbage and garbage which should not be burned, such as metal, glass, vinyl, leather, batteries, PET bottle caps and plastic bottles for detergents, shampoo and oil, is collected once a week on the designated day. To ensure the safety of garbage collection, make sure the contents of aerosol cans are used up before disposal. Please take used batteries that are re-chargeable and button-type batteries to retail shops that handle batteries for disposal.
    * Dangerous items such as glass, ceramic items, fluorescent lights, cutlery and other objects which may cause injury should be wrapped tightly in paper and marked “Kiken” (Danger).
  • Recyclable Resources: Collected once a week. Please separate 1. newspapers and fliers, 2. magazines/books/catalog/pamphlets, 3. cardboard, 4. paper milk cartons and bundle them with string. Bottles and cans for beverages and food should be lightly rinsed and put into containers at collection sites without being crushed.
    * Paper, bottles and cans for beverages and food that are not listed above may not be collected as recyclable resources. Please dispose them as burnable and non-burnable garbage.
  • PET Bottles: PET bottles for beverages should be lightly rinsed with water, crushed and placed in the PET Bottles collection box at stores.
  • Large Volumes of Garbage: If you have a large volume of garbage from an ordinary household, contact the Sanitation Office in advance.
  • Oversized Garbage: Call the Oversized Garbage Reception Center to make an appointment for the collection of oversized garbage, such as furniture and electrical appliances (measuring about 30 cm or more). Collection is done individually (for a fee).
