Public Baths

There are public baths called “sento” in Japan. Business hours vary, but are generally from 4:00 to 11:00 p.m., and they are closed once a week.

Take off your shoes at the entrance, put them in a shoe locker and lock the locker.
There are separate entrances for men and women.
Pay the fee at the reception counter (“bandai” clerk or front desk) inside.
There is a dressing room further inside. Take off your clothes, put them in a locker and lock the locker.
Before entering the bathtub, be sure to wash your body with a towel.
Do not scrub your body in the bathtub. Wash with soap in the washing area.
Since many people use the public bath, it is important to keep the bath clean. Do not use your towel inside the bathtub.
Before returning to the dressing room, wipe off your body and be careful not to make the dressing room floor wet.
