How to Open a Bank Account
If you would like to pay your public utility charges by automatic bank account transfer, you must have a bank account in Japan. To open an account, you must have some form of identification, such as a passport, foreign resident registration card or health insurance card. A signature or a seal is also required. Savings accounts include ordinary savings accounts, fixed-term deposits and installment time deposits. For regular withdrawals and deposits, however, use an ordinary savings account.
Cash Cards
If you have a bank account in Japan, you may also apply for a cash certificate.
Overseas Remittance
Authorized foreign exchange banks handle overseas remittances if you would like to send money abroad through a bank. There are three methods of sending remittances overseas: demand draft (D/D), telegraphic transfer (T/T) and mail transfer (M/T).
