Generally speaking, taxes include the national tax, which is paid to the national government, and local taxes, paid to the city and metropolitan government. The main taxes handled by the city include the following.
Special City Residents Tax
The Special City Residents Tax and Metropolitan Residents Tax are referred to as Residents Taxes. These taxes are levied on the residents of the region and are used for covering the expenses for the social services of local communities.
The Special City Residents Tax is levied on the following people:
- Those residing in Edogawa City as of January 1 with income earned during the previous year.
- Those who do not live in Edogawa City but have a business, office space or property in the city.
* If you currently do not have an income, but earned a designated amount of money or more during the previous year, then you must pay the applicable taxes.
* If you move out of Edogawa City during this year, you must still pay the applicable taxes for the city of residence as of January 1 (that is, Edogawa City).
Tax Amount
The tax is the total of a percentage of your income, plus a per capita sum if your income is a designated amount or higher.
Tax Report
If eligibility requirements 1 or 2 listed on the previous page applies to you, you must submit a report of your income for the previous year to the City Office by March 15 every year.
* If your salary was your only source of income the previous year and your employer submits a salary withholding tax form, you do not need to file a tax return.
Light Vehicle Tax
Residents who own a light motor vehicle and/or a motorcycle as of April 1 are subject to this tax.
Tax Payment
Tax notices/invoices are sent individually for the Special City Residents Tax/Metropolitan Residents Tax (for regular collection) in June and for the Light Vehicle Tax in May. When paying your taxes, take your invoice and pay at any financial institution, post office, the Tax Payment Section/Resident Section of the City Office or any branch office.

Automatic Bank Account Transfer Tax Payment (for Regular Collection)
When you pay by bank account transfer, the taxes are automatically transferred from your bank account for each tax period (period 1-4), without having to go to a financial institution, post office or the City Office. To take advantage of this payment method, complete a Bank Account Transfer Request Form available at any financial institution with the necessary information and an imprint of the seal you used to open the account. Then submit the completed form to the financial institution of your account (bank or post office).
