In Japan, a seal that is registered with a public institution such as the municipal office is called a jitsuin (official seal). It is required for such transactions as important contracts. When a seal registration certificate, which proves that the seal is registered at a public institution, is attached to a document, it certifies that the person whose name appears in the document is genuinely the person using the seal.
How to Register a Seal
If you are registering your seal in person, please bring the seal to be registered and your foreign resident registration card to the Foreign Resident Registration Subsection at the City Office or Resident Registration Subsection at each branch offices. The registration can be processed within the same day. (Registration fee: ¥50) If you would like someone to apply on your behalf, please inquire with the Foreign Resident Registration Subsection.
