Medical institutions in Japan include large hospitals which are well-equipped for hospitalization and testing, and regular doctors offices/clinics which are located in the neighborhood. It is a good idea to find out in advance what medical facilities are located close to your home. Then, if you ever become sick and need a doctor, you will not have to rush in a panic to find one. It is best to have a doctor whom you see regularly so that you rest assured even in the event of a sudden illness or injury.
Receiving Medical Treatment

-
- First of all, go to the reception counter and complete the designated procedures. Be sure to show your health insurance certificate if you have one.
- After obtaining a patients card, submit this to the reception counter of the medical department where you will be examined.
Wait in the waiting area until your name is called. (On subsequent visits, take your patients card to the counter for outpatient or returning patients.)
- After being examined, pay the fee at the cashier counter. (The amount of personally-borne cost depends on the type of health insurance you have. If you are not enrolled in health insurance or do not have your health insurance certificate with you, the entire cost must be personally borne.)
- The doctor may prescribe medication after the examination. If you need medication, go to the pharmacy (located separately in the case of a hospital) to receive your prescription.
- Most doctors offices/clinics have the reception counter and cashier in the same place.
