Earthquakes

Japan has frequent earthquakes. When a major earthquake occurs, buildings may topple over, fires may break out and utility services, such as electricity, gas and water, may be cut off. It is important to always be prepared for an earthquake.

• Preparing for an Earthquake
  1. Secure with braces furniture that may easily topple over, such as bureaus and cupboards.
  2. Keep fire extinguishers and fire prevention water such as used bathtub water handy.
  3. Prepare an emergency bag (as shown below).
  4. Inspect and reinforce your home, making it as earthquake-resistant as possible.
  5. Inspect and reinforce your concrete block walls.
  6. Actively participate in community disaster prevention drills and classes.
  7. Get to know your neighbors on a regular basis, so that you can take action together in times of emergency.

Emergency Bag
Drinking water (thermos or canteen), food (prepare about three days’ worth of food, including biscuits and canned food), portable radio, first-aid kit, flashlight, clothes, blankets, candles, tissue paper, etc.

• If an Earthquake Strikes

(When you are in the house)

  1. If you feel a slight tremor, protect yourself by crawling under the table, etc.
  2. Turn off all sources of heat as soon as the tremor stops.
  3. Open the doors and windows to secure an exit.
  4. Do not rush outside. Be alert to the danger of things falling from above.
  5. Check on the safety of your neighbors and help one another.
  6. Do not be influenced by hearsay.

(When you are outside)

  1. Stay away from narrow streets, gateposts and block fences.
  2. Be careful of falling objects, such as glass, signs, and tile walls.
  3. In underground shopping areas, keep calm and do not panic and rush to an exit.
  4. If you are in a building, do not use the elevators or escalators.
  5. If you are on a train or bus, follow the instructions of the conductor. Do not jump out of a train on your own.
  6. If you are driving, immediately park your car on the left side of the road. Listen to the car radio for current information. Leave the keys in the car when evacuating.

• Evacuation Sites

If a fire breaks out due to an earthquake, and if the flames threaten to spread in your neighborhood, then you should evacuate to a safe place together with your neighbors. Municipal elementary schools, junior high schools and public facilities serve as evacuation sites. It is a good idea to make sure you know the location of your nearest evacuation site and the way to the site.
